What Distro Should I Choose?ĭifferent Linux distributions are suited for different purposes. Some are designed to work out of the box – like Ubuntu – while others require a bit more tweaking, such as Arch Linux. Some Linux distributions are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses, such as home theater PCs. Others, such as Ubuntu LTS or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, are designed to be stable distributions that will be supported with security updates and bug fixes for many years. Some distributions are bleeding edge and won’t receive support for very long. Many also use different package managers, configuration utilities, and other software.

They include different default software – like how Ubuntu includes Unity, Ubuntu derivatives include other desktop environments, Fedora includes GNOME Shell, and Mint includes Cinnamon or MATE. Many have different philosophies – some, like Fedora, refuse to include closed-source software, while others, like Mint, include closed-source stuff to make it easier on users. There are multiple different Linux distributions.

These packages are fast and easy to install, saving you from doing the hard work yourself.
Linux mac os x distos install#
When you want to install new software or update to new versions of software with important security updates, your Linux distribution provides them in precompiled, packaged form. Most distributions add their own finishing touches, such as themes and custom software – the Unity desktop environment Ubuntu provides, for example. They also make choices for you, such as choosing the default desktop environment, browser, and other software. It seems that this distro has the potential to become the most beautiful Linux distro when it’s ready to roll.
Linux mac os x distos code#
Linux distributions do the hard work for you, taking all the code from the open-source projects and compiling it for you, combining it into a single operating system you can boot up and install. Solus OS (Evolve OS at the time of writing) is under development and in the alpha stage at the time of writing. However, compiling the software would take a lot of time – not to mention the work involved with making all the different programs work properly together. If you wanted to, you could grab the source code for the Linux kernel, GNU shell utilities, Xorg X server, and every other program on a Linux system, assembling it all yourself. They’re all open-source software distributed in source code form. System services, graphical programs, terminal commands – many are developed independently from another. There’s the Linux kernel (the core of the operating system), the GNU shell utilities (the terminal interface and many of the commands you use), the X server (which produces a graphical desktop), the desktop environment (which runs on the X server to provide a graphical desktop), and more. Different organizations and people work on different parts. The Linux operating system isn’t produced by a single organization. If you want Windows, you’ll need to choose one of the versions Microsoft is offering.

Microsoft combines all the bits of Windows internally to produce each new release of Windows and distributes it as a single package. There is no getting away from the fact that helloSystem is part cool project, and part homage to the classic era of Cupertino’s celebrated computing export (aka Mac OS X) Like Apple, these FreeBSD devs want to offer an “out-of-the-box user experience” as simple and fuss-free as mid-2000s Mac.Linux isn’t like Windows or Mac OS X.

And if Ubuntu is ‘Linux for human beings’ then helloSystem is close to being ‘FreeBSD for Mac switchers’. OpenSolaris? Oh yes! ReactOS? Roger that! But BSD? Still TBD, at least for me.įor me, new unexplored tech territory is exciting. Now, FreeBSD is a strand of computing I’ve never played with, not even during the exuberant and overreaching “FYIDYK” years. Devs working on helloSystem want to create “a desktop system for creators with focus on simplicity, elegance, and usability” built atop FreeBSD, an open source Unix-like OS. What helps helloSystem stand out (to me, anyway) more than its ‘unique’ UI is its ambition. If Ubuntu is ‘Linux for human beings’ then helloSystem is ‘FreeBSD for Mac switchers’ This project was the subject of a talk at the recent FOSDEM event, and it’s that talk that pole-vaulted the project in to the eye-line of bloggers like myself. A number of FreeBSD-based “distros” - I don’t know if there’s a different term for BSD flavours, so I’m rolling with this - are available but the first to catch my attention is called helloSystem.
